This evening we found a lost beagle mix running back and forth across Fulton Rd. It was about 6:30pm so I called the Humane Society, no help but there was an emergency number on their machine. That number led me to the Sheriff's dept., who couldn't help because I lived in Santa Rosa and they only handle outside city limits. They have me a number to call at the local police station. They took down my information and someone from Animal Control called me back. To my surprise there wasn't anything anyone could do until morning. So here I have this happy go-lucky beagle mix with no name tag wandering around my backyard with my dog. So my husband and I took to the streets, going door to door. Just finding out that some people had taken him in for a day already and sent him back out! I was like you sent him back out? What if he got hit by a car? Geez. I also found out that other people saw him outside the last few days. On our walk I noticed that his collar is super tight, I don't think he's been paid much attention. So I ended up feeding him and putting him in my dogs large crate and placing him in an office room downstairs. But I am still so surprised no one could help me because it wasn't an emergency. Plus, people just didn't care enough to help him before. So sad, because he really is a sweet dog and now is best buds with my dog. Animal control is picking him up in the morning. I just feel so bad for this poor guy.
I too saw this jet-fast beagle running like if there was no tomorrow. I was turning from Piner Rd. onto Fulton. I notice no one slowed down as he was approaching Fulton and I figured if I turn, I might hit him, so I stopped and let the dog pass me. Thankfully southbound traffic on Fulton was at a stop, the dog slowed down to weave passed the cars and made it across. By that time, I lost track of him with all the cars in my view. I think it is so nice of you to help this lost dog out. How did you ever catch him? I hope he is chipped.

My husband was pulling out of our street and noticed him weaving in and out just north of Piner Rd. He as on the right side at the moment so he took a chance pulled up there, threw the car door opend and yelled "come on get in". And he did. He turned around and came back to our house. He actually was a really good listener. I guess he'll be at the shelter for 4 days, if no one claims him he'll be put up for adoption. I doubt he was chipped, his collar was really really tight so I assume his owners haven't paid the attention they need too. I know that is an assumption on my part, but I would easily noitice if my dog's collar was too tight. I hope if no one claims him he finds a good home through adoption.
I think you are correct in assuming his owner wasn't paying attention. My thought is the dog may have been penned up and just got free and loved to run. It sounds like your husband saw him right after I did. Thank goodness he saved him because he was bound to get hurt. If the owner/s do claim him, I wonder if animal control will do something about the dog's tight collar like holding them responsible for lack of attention to the sweet little guy? He looked like a great dog and I hope he finds a loving family.

Thank you both for taking the time to intervene with this dog.
A tight collar is often a sign of neglect. Often abuse cases will not be prosecuted unless, gads, the collar has grown into the neck of the dog. The owners could be cited for allowing an animal to run loose.
It's also a beagle and they tend to follow their noses much more than other breeds.
Chances are as well, that this guy got on the scent of something and turned off the other more logical parts of his brain. Always trying to keep an open mind about how dogs get loose.
The way this beagle ran, the nose definitely lead the way.....wwaaayy out there and oh so fast, it scared me as he approached such a busy intersection all alone.
One would think a tight collar is as bad as an ingrown one....sigh

hi I think u have my ex dog.he is a small dog golden brown he"s name is pop. My name is debbie call my number if u still have pop my number is707-570-9952 thank u very much takinggood care of him
editor: Yeah I tried to tell myself maybe he's been lost a long time that's why his collar was so tight. Or maybe the owner didn't know better. Really I just felt bad for him.
taxigodus: I'm sorry you lost your dog. Maybe it's the same dog, but this dog was about 25 ibs. and was black, white and dark brown spots. He doesn't sound like the dog you discribed. Anyway, he's at the local shelter if you want to check on him. They also found a golden colored terrier around the same time, who's also listed in thier lost dog section. The beagle, however, photo ia a dupe from the picture above it, so anyway if you think it's your dog please call the shelter. If not, I hope you do find your dog.
actually, like i said above his picture is a dupe from the above dog. However, here is a website for lost animals that are in local shelters Pet Harbor
