Nice idea Peter, but you forgot to include the greatest incentive of all: lower corporate taxes, payroll taxes, and property taxes. Businesses have been leaving Sonoma county in droves due to skyrocketing taxes. Sonoma County has been a business-unfriendly environment for many years.
Yet perhaps you intentionally left out the issue of decreasing taxation because you need a way to fund the increase in non-profit organizations you happily forecast.
I wonder how long it will take government folk to realize this: there will be no middle class if taxes are not lowered soon; there will only two classes: poor and elite.

Businesses don't build in counties that are loaded with small minded municipalities that overburden society with unnecessary laws. They also don't build in counties that burden businesses with unnecessary taxes and fees. Sonoma County would be dead last on my places to build a business.

You are also wrong about the local governments being good about gangs, crime, transportation, infrastructure or anything else they are charged with providing. They all suck and as a group are as bad as I've ever seen. Together they have made this county totally undesirable as a place to invest money or build anything.

Wake up or pass around whatever drugs you are on so everyone can look at the county through your rose colored glasses.

Maybe the vacancy rate is high because we're overbuilt. Maybe the demand isn't there.

Plus, we still have the highest cost of housing in the nation. The employees need to live close by.

everytime a business wants to come to Sonoma County the residents chase them away because they want local businesses Walmart, Lowes just to name a couple. I want local businesses to succeed but local businesses can't employ all the residents. The largest single employer in Sonoma County is the County Government. We need to attract businesses and not run them out of town because of misplaced hatred for corporations.

Well said. 1st to comments are right on. As a business owner it has been my experience that local government is not local business friendly. This is not just with tax and laws...They say they support local. They say they campaign for local business prosperity, but the truth is that both the county and cities buy most of their supplies from out of the area. No valid reasons, just excuses.

Walmart and Lowes are retail stores, which Sonoma county has an abundance of. The Columnist is referring to the corporate offices of business; the type of offices where employees make a significantly higher wage than that offered by Walmart.

I fail to see how having an influx of white-collar jobs will in anyway decrease the amount of gang activity in Sonoma County. Sure, increasing the population by adding non-gang members decreases the gang members per capita, but in no way will that decrease the gang activity.

Once again our PD readers get it right. This is about the worst place in California to have a business. In the list above, business property tax was not listed, cute huh? -sonsofbitches!

Our commentor,Peter is correct, we need business in Sonoma County. The comments on this page are correct, the attitude, taxes, fees and laws need to be changed to accomodate business.

Sonoma County is the only County in the association of Bay Area Counties that has mandatory "build green" laws. So for the tennant improvements for the bulding shown in the picture, the architect, engineer and owner would have to design and pay for substaintial additional mandatory green building products.

The business occuping the building would have substaintial added costs, but no benifit.

If I had to buld new again, it would not be here.

Additionally, transportation in Sonoma County is very poor. Our roads are in the porest condition of any in the bay area.
The widening of highway 101 comes 30 years late, but better late than never. Highway 12 is a road to nowhere, is congested and one of the most dangerous highways in California. The 12 connector needs to be built.

The train is a bonus, but with the mills, quarries and most industries shut down what will it haul? Garbage? wine bottles?

Sonoma County needs to address the lack of water by building a new reservor. There is promise as some of the preliminary love is being shown in the right directions.

Currently a water intesive business could not settle here.

The illegal immigration in this County needs to be addressed immediatly. I dispise paying the taxes I do, only to travel minnutes from work to be surrounded by the taco flats. #13 painted here, #13 painted there, hell will someone come up with a no.14 or 15 gang so my little ones can count past 13.

Daddy what 13 mean?...Well honey, that should scare you, those are people who murder, rape and sell drugs. Mabie Susan Gorin would like to explain to my children what murder, rape and drug dealers are. She promotes their existence.

The bathrooms at parks are locked becouse dope heads take them over. Try explaining that to a child who has to go poop- right now!
My tax dollars were good enough to build the park and bathrooms, yet nobody(SRPD) has the balls to run the doper's out of town.

The last time my wife went to Doyle park she carried her 45 in her purse. It is wrong that she felt she needed to do that when SRPD is two blocks away. What are we paying for?

Sonoma County has unaffordable housing due to the astronomical developer fees and taxes. Over $157,000.00 on average, of a home built in 2007 was given per home to the local cities. Another way of looking at it is this, new home owners are paying over $1,000.00 per month on the developer fees paid for their home.
What value did the homeowner get for this huge fee? Nothing.

Business is what creates jobs and tax revenue. Something we are desperate for here in our county.

The debt we are taking on is not sustainable. Our quality of life has been lowerd by poor dicisions and failing to act.

The budget cuts, the lack of services, the rut just keeps getting deeper and deeper.

Our polititians are so out of touch, they think we want bicycle friendly streets. The only ones on bicycles are kids, The adults are riding to the liquor store or the marijuana dispensary.

What is the answer? Either the green friendly progressives make a change and get business to Sonoma County, or Sonoma County needs to make a change and get rid of the green friendly progressives.

SlowNoMa County

Home of poorly educated, racist, self-entitled, inbred, booze laden, provincial, hillbillies and out of touch, pie in sky hippies and their compliant bureaucrats.

Couple this with a whine industry that makes their profit on the back of illegal labor and you have a recipe of employment nirvana.

Party on Garth.

Maybe firing the entire city council might draw new employers here. Their agenda is to make downtown one big park. No one but the homeless are going to hang out there like they do right now.

Tide has started to turn with NY and NJ. House cleaning will continue across the states... Pretending to represent the People until you get in office and then only support those who paid for your office will come to an end. Putting the needs of the people above everything else will be a priority this winter as those in tent cities get cold, sick and hungry. Crime will increase as those people try to provide for their families. Bike lanes, salamander habitats and other pet projects that provide jobs for special interest groups won't help. We need to provide jobs for the general population and NOW.

The two governor wins that you mentioned are the first real nails in Obama's coffin. The trouble is most people in California have no clue of the importance of those elections.

I feel that the 2010 elections will be a real wake up call for the liberals with their heads in the sand. Then we have the reps like Pelosi, Boxer and your districts beloved Lynn Woolsey that act like they cannot hear the voters. I wonder how they truly feel today...they will hide their concerns or brush off the results of the East Coast elections like it does not matter...but it will.

When they voted for the bailout saying that the majority of the people don't understand the consequences if we vote against it was utter BS.
Wall Street got the extra money filled their pockets gave the money they borrowed back to the gov and we got screwed...
