Falling 2,000 feet from red banks would mean he fell all the way down avalanche gulch, past the heart and almost to Helen Lake. This fall would take several minutes. Perhaps the reporter meant two hundred feet?

You ARE kidding, right? Otherwise, I'd have to say something rude. Like: As a fully white NON-mountaineer I say let anyone climb, I don't see YOU up there. As to his helicopter ride, he'll get about a $10,000 bill for it, more or less. Quit being a racist do-nothing who just makes ignorant comments on a low circulation newpaper.

Another point: My father would spin in his grave to see his life's work reduced to the mostly regional picture of immigration in America. And the foolish bias some have while making armchair comments of just what they see and read now. Go to the library, (that's the big building with books) and read up on the Cold War in Europe. Then hug a Mexican.

I see an ice axe in the earlier photo. I'd want that puppy strapped to my hand on a climb like that. Shasta is a very hard climb and many get high up on the mountain before realizing how difficult it is.

we allow people to climb thousands of feet thinking it is cool then insist that to ride a bike you must be legally bound to wear a helmet, place warnings on everything etc....too funny

Only children are required to wear helmets. I am an adult, so I am not required to wear one. But I usually do anyway.

Biking is a very common activity and should not be a high-risk activity. People bike all the time.

Mountain-climbing is a high-risk activity. So is skydiving. Skydiving does have laws that pertain to it regarding who can pack a chute, etc. I assume there are some laws regarding climbing too.

I do know what you mean. Sometimes it seems people have gone crazy with all the warnings, etc. A few years ago, I saw a box of Wheaties or Wheat Chex. (Wording approximate; I don't remember the exact words.) On the box, it said, "Food allergic consumers: Please see ingredient statement on side panel." On the side panel, it said, "Warning: Contains wheat ingredients."

Duh. I wouldn't have guessed.

A walk up Whitney and a few trips to Shasta doesn't make anyone a guide. Sounds to me like he had no business being on the mountain. I hope he picks up the tab for the helicopter.

I'm glad he was not hurt any worse, but a broken hip is bad enough.

Personally, I think anyone that participates in high risk activities like this ought to be required to take out insurance in the event of an accident to help pay for the rescue/recovery and any medical costs associated with the incident.

Everything is else is regulated and requires insurance. Why are government/taxpayer services not insured against these kinds of mishaps by those who chose to participate in them?

How about a little consistency in regulating and legislating everything.
