Thank you for printing this article. It is important the entire story is told. This has been a tragedy in Fort Bragg of many year standing. It is very important that the story is told not only for Aaron, but also to encourage other victims to come forward so they can get help to resolve their own problems.

If it can truly be established that this McNiel character was coming around trying to get close to Vargas' newborn then it's obvious justifiable homicide. Sounds to me like Vargas was protecting his baby. I'd do the same in a heartbeat.

This is one that should be tried in Ft. Bragg, with the jury drawn from residents of Ft. Bragg. They know what was going on and will reach a just verdict.

VARGAS DID THE RIGHT THING, now that scumbag wont be able to molest anymore people.
all am saying is that if the molester was on trial he would of gotten away with three months of "alternative" jail and a year of provation. it is the lack of real punishment for these monsters that drive people like vargas to do what he did. dont forget about that petaluma doctor who was trying to have sex with a fourteen year old, he got away with it!!!!!

This is a beautifully written article; and, would almost be poetry, were the subject of this story not so tragic. As a Survivor of sexual victimization when I was a little girl, I know that,once they reach adulthood, many Victims often think of killing their perpetrators and/or themselves; and I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. I don't know what to say to this Poor fellow who was so tortured by the memories of the horrors that were inflicted upon him by this pedophile, that he saw no other way out. I do hope Mr. Vargas listens carefully to his Attorneys and that he will get the help he needs.

I agree with you EXCEPT we have courts and laws to deal with these things. When we as citizens decide that we will mete out any justice we see fit we are heading down an ugly road. It reminds me of the Menendez brothers who killed both of their parents only to claim that they were molested. Well they may have but the punishment is not slaughtering them and splattering them all over the place. And it sure is easy to yell molestation when there is no one left to defend themselves. In this case it seems that others will bear witness...NOW. But we simply cannot allow people to decide that they were wronged and go after the person who they believe wronged them.

There is a lot more that isn't written in this article. The abuse was reported to the police at least 3 times. Nothing was done, nothing at all. A victim told the mormon church that Darrell abused him and they kicked Darrell out of the church but didn't report it. Darrell abused his own children, who are behind Aaron. There are many, many victims. Aaron kept his gun loaded. His fiancee testified to that significant piece of information. The system failed over and over and allowed Darrell to keep abusing for decades. Our laws are not protecting our children.

I am shaking my head in amazement. This is truly sad. What is alleged here is that police officers, parents and much of the community knew this guy was molesting kids ...and the cops did nothing about it. Okay...if that be the case that sucks...and so do they. WERE THE PARENTS BRAIN IN A JAR ON THE COUNTER?????? If I ever suspected that one of my children MIGHT be in a community as you describe....cops ...no action....community ...no action....It would take me less than 20 minutes to get them out of that community. I also had, with my two sons the kind of relationship, because we were totally involved in parenting that no one could have done this without me seeing it.

This kind of reminds me of people who post here that cops intentionally go to work to kill unarmed or lessor armed citizens; yet with that belief they buy a house; enroll their children in school etc etc.

No if this happened as alleged there is plenty of blame to go around but that still does not justify taking the law and courts into your own hands and meting out your own justice.
