Hey, At least all the special interest friends of the democrats got their money.

BI has a great program. I used to hire as many of their clients as I could when I was in business. They provide a lot more than jobs for their clients and allow them to lead a normal life.
I hope the program gets back on track. |

One thing the 'developmentally disabled' have in common with everyone else...they can bitch and moan as well as anybody.
They're lucky they live here, in the USA. If they lived in Africa, no one would be doing anything for them. Not that I don't feel sorry for them, but just to put it in perspective. |

And the republicans also. You are only too blind to see it. |

The developmentally disabled seem to know a lot about their rights and have great advocates.
It's too bad he is going to lose some hours on his job, as it is something productive to do, but I'm sure he is receiving some SSI or some other stipend. He's luckier than some who have nothing, despite the disability. |

... so much for bragging about being a "christian" nation... doubt that the way Americans treat the disabled, elderly, sick and poor, will match any of the teachings of Jesus... in fact it seems to be the OPPOSITE... but we rant on Islam etc... LOOK IN THE MIRROR AMERICA

I was wondering why there was such an up tick in activity on this board.
I guess most of the posters are furloughers. |

Thought there was a minimum wage and a lot more than $3.17/hr? What is up with that?

These people are developmentally disabled and if employers were forced to pay them minimum wage no one would hire them. They go through a job training program and then are placed into businesses that would be suited to their skills. Their pay goes up in proportion to their skills. Some of these individuals have long lasting work relationships and their pay can reach minimum wage. BI does much more than that though. They provide a job coach to act as a coordinator between the employee and employer and they have workers assigned to them that help with life issues like housing, relationships, paying bills, cooking and even recognizing abuse if it is an issue. They allow these people to get out of group homes and allows them to enjoy independence. It is a great program. |

Say what you may...but at least the guy is WILLING TO WQRK and at below minimum wage!! How many slackers out there are collecting welfare, food stamps, free bus passes and free food from the food bank? Talk about whinners, some of them think they are entitled to more!!
Having been a social worker for almost 4o years I have seen my share of non-deserving slackers getting rewarded for their refusal to find work. |

so you had people working for you and the government was paying them? they do work that you tell them to do, work that benefits you, you don't pay them, but the government does. you a true conservative modern day capitalist alright. a mix of conservative/capitalist/industrialist/socialist/and welfare recipient all rolled into one. congratulations. maybe we should 'get the program back on track' by raising the sales tax another cent so there would be more tax money to pay the workers that you conservative/business/capitalists rely on. |

I paid them the wage that BI told me that they were qualified to receive. I took no money or free labor from anybody. My contract was with BI. You should understand how the program works because it is designed to work for everybody. If you are in a position to hire anybody you should call them. I primarily used them for sweeping and cleaning and had to get a side deal with the union to allow it. They were not producing enough to warrant full pay but they earned what I paid them. |

i know government money was involved somehow, otherwise it wouldn't be saving tax money to cut it.
the old CETA program was popular, employers could "hire" and the government did the paying. same sort of deal with the newer cal-works. |

The government pays the cost of administration and the cost of the job coach and worker, the labor is paid by the business. I don't know if BI pays the employee more than they charge the business because I am not privy to that information. Regardless of the cost, the program only helps those in need unlike many social programs and it gives these individuals a quality of life that they could never have without it. I have a developmentally disabled daughter but she isn't in any programs. She lives at home and we take care of her. It is nice to know though that if we die or can no longer help her she has these options available. A society should be judged on how well they care for their helpless. |
