| My friend Jennie and her then-husband Neil owned a team of powerful Clysdale Draft Horses, a familiar site at events around Northern California. The team lived in Jack London State Park in Glen Ellen, as Jennie’s husband is part of a family related to the author and adventurist Jack London. Among the vineyards and historical buildings, the team prepared to carry brides to their weddings, fair goers on hay rides around the County Fair site, or perhaps a trek through the Scottish Games, where all manner of powerful athletes did wild and wonderful things. When my husband moved into a new office with an extra door, he asked me to create a painting large enough to hang over the door and hide it. Jennie and I stretched some large canvases to size, and sat down one day to paint the powerful big foots, who are displayed in all their glory each Fall at the Draft Horse Classic in Nevada City. Jennie’s paintings tended to be literal and realistic, capturing the horses she loved. My imagination got the better of me, perhaps because I was wearing a tee-shirt that proudly proclaimed “If you can’t run with the Big Horses, You Best Just Stay In The Barn.” The result is Horse Power! You can almost feel the thunder that happens when these horses coming running. We rode them on Doran Beach at Bodega Head bareback, and even on sand, their powerful strides struck the Earth with a power that was mesmerizing. I like the look here, and so did my husband: it covered the door quite nicely. More celebrations of horses at Link |
